alt:V and RAGE:MP shut down: how to move your GTA V server to FiveM

alt:V went offline in July 2026 and RAGE:MP followed. What happened, why FiveM is the way forward, and how to move your GTA V server with GGHOST Cloud.

If you ran a GTA V roleplay or freeroam server on alt:V or RAGE:MP, 2026 changed everything. Both platforms were asked by Take-Two, the publisher behind Rockstar Games, to close, and both have gone dark. Your community, your scripts and your database still exist, though, and there is a clear, legitimate home for them: FiveM. This guide explains what happened, what carries over and what has to be rebuilt, and how to get a FiveM server running with GGHOST Cloud.

What happened to alt:V and RAGE:MP

alt:V was a multiplayer modification for GTA V that ran for around nine years and became the best-known alternative to FiveM, especially for roleplay communities. In early 2026 Take-Two asked it to shut down. New server registrations stopped in March, the public server list went offline in May, and on 6 July 2026 the master server and the rest of the platform switched off for good.

RAGE:MP, the other long-running alternative, received the same request. Its public server list was due to close in June and the platform was scheduled to go completely dark on 31 August 2026.

The reason given was the same in both cases: FiveM is the only GTA V multiplayer modding platform Take-Two authorises. That follows from Rockstar acquiring Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, in 2023. For server owners the practical message is simple: if you want a GTA V community server that will still be online next year, it runs on FiveM.

The name may be gone, but your players are not. Most alt:V and RAGE:MP communities are moving to FiveM now, and the ones that tell their players early keep them.

What carries over, and what does not

Moving platforms is closer to a rebuild than a copy-paste, so it helps to sort your server into three piles.

Carries over

  • Your community. Your Discord, your rules, your staff and your players’ goodwill are the most valuable part of any server, and none of it depended on alt:V or RAGE:MP.
  • Your ideas and design. Jobs, economy balance, laws, factions and lore all move across.
  • Much of your data. If your server kept characters, vehicles and money in a MySQL or MariaDB database, the data itself is portable. FiveM servers commonly use MySQL-compatible databases too.

Needs work

  • Scripts. alt:V resources were mostly written in JavaScript or C#, and RAGE:MP used JavaScript and C#. FiveM supports Lua, JavaScript and C#, but its natives, events and resource structure are different, so scripts have to be ported, not copied. Simple logic moves quickly; anything built around platform-specific events needs rewriting.
  • Player identifiers. Each platform identified players differently. FiveM exposes identifiers such as the Rockstar licence, Steam and Discord, so plan how existing character rows map to the new identifiers, for example by asking players to link their Discord on first join.
  • Your framework. Most FiveM roleplay servers build on an established framework rather than from scratch. ESX and QBCore have the largest libraries of ready-made scripts, and Qbox is a newer fork that aims to stay compatible with QBCore resources. Picking one early saves months.

A sensible migration plan

  1. Announce it. Tell your players where you are going and when. A date and a Discord channel for the move keep people together.
  2. Choose a framework whose scripts match your style of server, and stand up a clean FiveM test server with it.
  3. Port your core first: characters, money, inventory and the two or three jobs your players use most. Everything else can follow.
  4. Map your data. Export your database, then write a one-off script that moves character data into the framework’s tables, keyed to the new identifiers.
  5. Run a public test weekend, fix what breaks, then switch your Discord links and server name over to the FiveM server.

FiveM essentials for former alt:V owners

A few things work differently from what you are used to:

  • A licence key is required. Every FiveM server needs a free key from the Cfx.re Portal, set in server.cfg.
  • txAdmin is the standard web panel for FiveM: it handles restarts, bans, player management and recipes that install a framework for you.
  • OneSync is FiveM’s state-awareness system and is needed for larger player counts; it is enabled in server.cfg.
  • Platform rules apply. FiveM servers operate under the Cfx.re Platform License Agreement, which includes rules on monetisation. Read it before you sell anything to players.

Our full FiveM server hosting guide covers RAM sizing, txAdmin, frameworks and the database in detail. If you used RAGE:MP or alt:V for a Western roleplay idea instead, RedM is the authorised platform for Red Dead Redemption 2.

Moving your server to GGHOST Cloud

FiveM servers on GGHOST Cloud are set up on request, so we can size them around your framework and player count:

  1. Ask us on Discord (or open a ticket) with your framework, expected player count and whether you are bringing a database from alt:V or RAGE:MP.
  2. We size it and quote a monthly price, then set the server up on our Pterodactyl panel, usually within a few days.
  3. Upload your resources and import your data over SFTP or the file manager; the panel includes database access for your framework.
  4. Point your community at the new address, which is shown in the panel.

From then on you have a live console, file manager, SFTP, scheduled restarts and announcements, sub-users for your staff, and backups on a schedule you set that restore from the panel. Every node is behind DDoS protection from our network providers, and you talk to the people who run the servers, on Discord or at hello@gghost.cloud.

The short version

alt:V and RAGE:MP are gone, and FiveM is the authorised home for GTA V community servers. Your players, ideas and data come with you; your scripts need porting to a FiveM framework such as ESX, QBCore or Qbox. Announce the move early, port your core systems first, and run a test weekend before you switch. When you are ready, we will set up the server for you.

Sizing

How much RAM a FiveM server needs.

What we size real servers at. Mods, map size and world age move these numbers up.

Up to 32 players 8 GB
Light resource stack
32 – 64 players 16 GB
Full framework and database
64+ players 24 GB+
Heavy roleplay stacks

How it works at GGHOST Cloud

From request to running server.

  1. 01 Ask on Discord Tell us the FiveM build, mods and player count you need.
  2. 02 We size it We recommend the RAM and region, and quote a monthly price.
  3. 03 We set it up Installed on our Pterodactyl panel, usually within a few days.
  4. 04 Invite your players Console, file manager, SFTP and backups, all in one panel.

Included on every server

The platform behind your FiveM server.

Full Pterodactyl panel

Console, file manager, SFTP, scheduled tasks, sub-users and database access. Not a cut-down skin over it.

Backups on a schedule

Set the cadence you want and restore to a point in time from the panel, without opening a ticket.

DDoS protection included

Every node sits behind DDoS protection from our network providers, on every plan — not an upsell on the checkout page.

Switch version or build anytime

Change the server build, game version or startup flags from the panel and restart. No reinstall, no ticket.

Move region once per cycle

If your players move, the server can follow. We handle the world and config transfer.

No player-slot billing

You pay for memory. Slots are a config value you set, not a line item we charge for.

FiveM server FAQ

Questions players ask us.

Do I need a FiveM licence key?

Yes — server keys are issued free by Cfx.re and you add yours in the panel. We do not resell or bundle them.

Can I still run an alt:V server privately?

No. alt:V's master server and platform services went offline on 6 July 2026, and the client depended on them, so servers can no longer be reached through alt:V at all. RAGE:MP was scheduled to go fully dark on 31 August 2026.

Do my players need to buy anything new to join a FiveM server?

They need a legitimate PC copy of GTA V, exactly as they did for alt:V or RAGE:MP, plus the free FiveM client. As the server owner you also need a free server licence key from the Cfx.re Portal.
