DayZ is a survival game where the server is the whole experience. It decides where loot spawns, how long items last, when it gets dark, which mods are loaded and who is allowed in. That is why so many DayZ communities run their own: a private group wants a quieter world, a PvP community wants more military loot, and a roleplay server wants a whole set of mods and rules. This guide covers how the DayZ server works, what drives memory, the settings that matter, mods, the loot economy, and how to get a server running on GGHOST Cloud.
What you are hosting
The DayZ dedicated server runs a mission: a map plus the files that control the world on it. The default mission for Chernarus lives in the mpmissions folder as dayzOffline.chernarusplus. Inside it are the files that make DayZ what it is, including the loot economy and the persistence data.
Two kinds of files shape a DayZ server:
serverDZ.cfg, the main server configuration: the name, passwords, player limit, time and security settings.- The mission files, which control the world: what spawns, where, and for how long.
Persistence matters a lot in DayZ. Tents, barrels, stashes and base building are saved in the mission’s storage_1 folder, so a server can carry a world from one restart to the next. You can change the server build, game version or startup flags from the panel and restart.
How much RAM does a DayZ server need?
DayZ does not have a single right figure, because the cost depends on how you run it:
- Concurrent players. Each player keeps an area of the map active around them.
- Mods. Large content packs, extra weapons, vehicles and building mods add a lot. Modded servers need clearly more than vanilla.
- Custom maps. Community maps can be much heavier than the official ones.
- Persistence. A long-running server with many bases, tents and stashes has more to load and save.
We size DayZ servers with you: tell us your player count, map and mod list, and we recommend the memory from that. If the memory graph sits near the top at peak, size up before players feel it.
On GGHOST Cloud you pay for memory, not player slots.
maxPlayersis a setting you choose, not a line on the invoice.
The settings in serverDZ.cfg
You can edit serverDZ.cfg from the panel’s file manager. Restart after any change. The keys you will touch first:
hostname: the server name players see in the browser.password: a join password. Leave it empty for a public server.passwordAdmin: the admin password. In game, admins log in with#loginand this password, so keep it strong and private.maxPlayers: the player limit.disable3rdPerson: set it to1for a first-person-only server.verifySignatures: checks mod files against their keys, so players cannot join with altered mods. Keep it at2.BattlEye: the anti-cheat. Keep it on for any public server.serverTimeAccelerationandserverNightTimeAcceleration: how fast time passes during the day, and how much faster nights go. Faster nights are popular, because many players find long DayZ nights hard going.serverTimePersistent: keeps the time of day across restarts instead of resetting it.
The loot economy
DayZ’s central economy decides what spawns, how often and how long it stays. Its main file is types.xml, in the mission’s db folder. Each item has entries for how many should exist on the map, the minimum before more spawn, and how long it lasts before it despawns.
This is where a server gets its character. A hardcore server keeps weapons rare; a PvP server raises military loot; a building server lets materials last longer. Two rules make economy edits safe:
- Change a few items at a time and watch how the world plays before changing more.
- Validate the XML. A missing bracket can stop items spawning at all. Keep a copy of the original file so you can compare.
Mods and keys
DayZ mods come from the Steam Workshop. On the server, each mod is a folder (named with an @, such as @ModName) and it is loaded with the -mod= startup flag, with mods separated by semicolons. Load order matters: a mod that depends on another must load after it. Mods that only run on the server go in -serverMod= instead, so players do not need them.
Every mod also comes with a key file, a .bikey, which goes in the server’s keys folder. With signature checking on, a missing key is the most common reason players get kicked when they join.
- Match versions. Players download mods from the Workshop; when a mod updates, the server needs the same version.
- Back up before adding mods. Some mods change persistence, and removing them later can affect stored items.
- Add mods a few at a time and check the console after each restart.
Restarts and keeping it healthy
DayZ servers are normally restarted on a regular schedule. Restarts let the economy refresh loot and keep a long-running world in good shape. Use the panel’s scheduled tasks to post warnings to players and restart at set times. Pick times that suit your players, and keep them the same so your community knows when to expect them.
Backups and saves
On GGHOST Cloud, backups run on a schedule you set and restore from the panel without opening a ticket. Back up daily, and take a manual backup before game updates, mod changes and economy edits.
The parts that matter most are the mission folder (with storage_1 for persistence and db for the economy), serverDZ.cfg and the keys folder. If you are moving from another host, upload them over SFTP along with your mods and the server picks up where you left it.
Getting a DayZ server on GGHOST Cloud
DayZ is set up on request, not through checkout yet.
- Ask us. Message us on Discord (or open a ticket) with the build, map, mods and player count you need, and where your players are. Singapore and Europe (France–Germany border) are live today; the United States (East, Central and West), the United Kingdom, India, Japan and Australia are available on demand.
- We size it and quote. We recommend the memory for your setup and quote a monthly price. There is no setup fee and no contract, and billing is at app.gghost.cloud.
- We set it up. We build the server on our Pterodactyl panel, usually within a few days, with your mission, mods and keys in place.
- Share the address. The address and port are shown in the panel. Players add it in the DayZ launcher or game and join.
From there you have the full panel at panel.gghost.cloud: a live console, file manager, SFTP, scheduled tasks for restarts and announcements, sub-users for your admins, and database access. Every node is behind DDoS protection from our network providers, on every plan, which matters for public PvP servers. Support comes from the people who run the servers, on Discord and at hello@gghost.cloud.
The short version
Set the basics in serverDZ.cfg, keep BattlEye and signature checks on, put every mod’s .bikey in keys, shape your world in types.xml a few items at a time, restart on a schedule, and back up before every change. Size the memory for your map and mods, not just your player count, and a DayZ server stays playable for the long haul.
